This project is inspired by an old folk tale about a small Roman village flooded by water after the collapse of an underneath salt mine about two thousand years ago. The story says that when the lake water was clear enough, one could see the tip of the basilica, the highest point of the flooded village. Many have tried to dive in to reach the old village, only some to never return. During my childhood, I took multiple trips in rowboats over the lake in the search for the old basilica, and often wondered about the underwater divers. By deciphering human bodies fragmented by underwater light and shadows, utilizing pigment prints on silk and rag, performance video and installation, I am investigating the imaginative proposition of what might have happened to the divers who never returned, and explore the tension of self-discovery and identity, and the in-between states of one's self-awareness.
